Leechwell Garden is a vibrant community green space nestled in the historic market town of Totnes, Devon. Just a short walk from the town centre, it offers a peaceful retreat for residents and visitors alike—blending nature, heritage, and play in a beautifully designed setting. Opened in 2010 after years of community consultation and campaigning, Leechwell Garden is the result of a grassroots effort by local residents, supported by Totnes Development Trust, Totnes Town Council, and the Leechwell Garden Association. The space was designed by landscape architect Charlotte Rathbone, guided by community values of inclusivity, sustainability, and wellbeing.
Leechwell Garden is thoughtfully divided into several interconnected areas: A herb garden and community orchard, showcasing native and medicinal plants. A natural play area for children, including a sandpit, water feature, and timber structures. Quiet corners with benches and pergolas for rest, reflection, and conversation Beautifully crafted stone walls, mosaics, and sculptures, celebrating Totnes’s creative spirit. Wildlife-friendly planting that attracts birds, pollinators, and local biodiversity.
Managed and maintained by a dedicated team of volunteers, Leechwell Garden is more than a park—it’s a living example of community stewardship. The garden regularly hosts events, planting days, and seasonal celebrations, fostering connection among people of all ages. We are seeking volunteers to both garden with us, and join us at fundraising events. We are also seeking a social media/website wiz to bring us up to date!
