 Service name

The Chill Tent – SEND the Help CIC

About the service

The Chill Tent is a staffed, pop-up calm and wellbeing space delivered by SEND the Help CIC, a Barnstaple-based Community Interest Company working to improve inclusion, access and wellbeing for children, young people, families and communities across Devon.

The provision is designed for use at public events, festivals and community days, offering a welcoming, non-stigmatising space for individuals who experience sensory overload, anxiety or overwhelm. While SEND-informed, The Chill Tent is suitable for adults as well as children and families, and is designed to support inclusive participation in busy public environments.

The service reflects SEND the Help CIC’s wider mission to reduce barriers to access, promote wellbeing, and support communities to be more inclusive in practice rather than policy alone.

What the Chill Tent provides

  • A visible, calm and welcoming space within busy event settings
  • Support for people experiencing sensory overload, anxiety or emotional overwhelm
  • Trained staff with SEND, neurodiversity and wellbeing experience
  • A professional, adaptable setup appropriate for a range of public events
  • Clear safeguarding, risk assessment and operational procedures

Purpose and impact

The Chill Tent supports anticipatory reasonable adjustments by enabling disabled and neurodivergent individuals to access and remain at events that might otherwise be inaccessible. It can also reduce pressure on first-aid, security and stewarding teams by offering early, supportive intervention in a calm environment.

Delivery and governance

The service is delivered by SEND the Help CIC, which operates with clear governance, safeguarding policies and risk management processes in place. The organisation works in partnership with statutory, education and community stakeholders and is supported by funding from the National Lottery Community Fund and local authority and community grants.

Who the service is for

  • Disabled and neurodivergent individuals
  • People experiencing anxiety or sensory overload
  • Families attending public events
  • Event organisers seeking inclusive, wellbeing-focused provision
