Exeter Science Choir is a new choir as part of the South Devon Singers family of musical groups.
Led by composer/science enthusiast, David Haines, it will only ever sing music about, or inspired by, science.
You can be a founder member! David's existing choir - South Devon Singers Community Choir - has been going twenty years, so he doesn't give up easily! Some of the founder members of SDS still sing with us.
The songs are in the widest imaginable range of styles and genres, from contemporary classical to jazz, blues to jingle, ballad to ..... well.....a bit weird sometimes... We sing from music, but everything is taught by ear, and there are copious downloadable online resources to help you learn and practise - pdfs of the sheet music, tutor tracks, audio clips of rehearsal sessions.
Some songs are unison, others in 2-, 3- or 4-part harmony. You don't need to be able to read music, but we find that most people prefer having it to follow, as it works as an aide-memoire seeing the blobs going up and down!
We welcome people with disabilities, and will do our best to accommodate your individual needs, whatever they are.
Regular ehearsals will begin on 26th September 2024 7-8.30pm on the university campus, though the venue has yet to be confirmed. Look out for notifications on social media or join the email list by sending your address (which will never be shared) to [email protected].
We have an extremely flexible payment scheme according to ability to pay. The only compulsory fee is £7 per year charity membership to make sure you're covered by our public liability insurance (not payable immediately). We then have recommended donations of £18 or £25 per month, but you can pay less if that would be difficult for you - or more if you like! You will never be excluded on financial grounds, even if you can't afford to pay anything for a while.
Meanwhile you can get a taste of our songs for free by coming along to the Mary Harris Memorial Chapel, Prince of Wales Road, EX4 4PX on Tuesday 17th September from 7.30-9.30pm, though it's a good idea to get there 10 or 15 minutes earlier if possible so you can pick up some music and find a place to sit. We strongly recommend bringing an A4 ring binder to hold the music.
You should find free parking (after 6) on Prince of Wales Road. Blue Badge holders can park right by the chapel, at the top of the cobbled driveway.
Just to be absolutely clear - this choir is open all members of the community - you do not need to be associated with the university to join.
We look forward to seeing you there!
