The Meadowside Charity Newton Abbot & District is a small, local charity which supports adults with learning disabilities.
The charity owns a residential home, Meadowside, in Newton Abbot, as well as providing several social events for its members who live in the wider community covering the Teignbridge and Torbay areas. The Charity was started in 1972 by a few families who had children with learning disabilities.
They bought ‘Meadowside’ in Newton Abbot (originally the children’s workhouse for the town and then run as children’s homes) as a permanent home for their children, some of whom are still living at Meadowside.
Meadowside provides 24-hour permanent residential care for 11 adults with learning disabilities, many of whom also have physical disabilities and complex care requirements. Many residents have lived at the Home for over 30 years and they all live together as a family, in a fun, happy and caring environment. There are also ‘members’ of the charity, who either live with relatives in the Teignbridge area or in sheltered housing in the town. They can use Meadowside as a ‘safe’ house and come along to various social events that are held throughout the year, including the Christmas Party.
