Gardening Wellbeing Health
The Community Garden welcomes new members. Suitable for all ages and gardening abilities, most of us are novice gardeners so you don’t have to worry about doing the wrong thing...there’s no such thing as a mistake with gardening because you always learn something new.
The garden is open for gardening sessions on Tuesday, Friday and Sundaybetween 11am - 2pm. You can drop in any time and stay as long as you want, some people come for the whole session and others just drop in for an hour.
There is no on-going commitment. If you have enthusiasm and an interest in gardening then we would love to hear from you. We have a dedicated friendly group who look after the garden as well as members who occasionally come along to our week-end sessions, there are often only a handful of us there at any time. If you become a member then you may have access to work in the garden whenever suits you. There are other ways to get involved if gardening isn't your thing; we are happy to have people who would like to help us with coffee mornings or jam and chutney making, there’s bits and pieces of DIY type of jobs. We hold regular well-being sessions, social evenings around a small fire, drumming circles, as well as children’s activity sessions and events. We have recently registered with the Children’s University as an activity provider.
Growing in the garden: fruit trees, soft fruits, herbs, vegetables and flowers. We hope to keep the garden as organic/chemical free as possible; planning on applying the no-dig method for growing the veg. Volunteers get a share of whatever food is grown in the garden
We have recently replaced the polytunnel cover, upgraded our waterless toilet and created a lovely area for children - we have the only outdoor sandpit in Okehampton.
Gardening is a great way to keep fit and does wonders for your mental health. We are very fortunate that we have such an incredible location for our community garden, with beautiful panoramic views of Dartmoor
