Teignbridge Council are proposing Self Build Compact Homes!
There is definitely a need for smaller homes, for smaller households.
The Council have been funded by Central Gov to explore a new design code called a Compact Home
These will appeal to singles, couples and small households who are looking to achieve housing security. Having a self build element may help people to afford their own home by contributing their labour
Many small sites within Teignbridge have already been earmarked as suitable for small residential development
A group of local people could deliver a pilot scheme to showcase a range of 'tiny homes' and work with the Council and key partners to achieve a final design specification
There will be a need to recruit a professional team to help deliver key elements of this scheme, and to fundraise for initial exploration and research
There are local examples of eco self build schemes, such as at Easterways, Broadhempston. Much support exists to help people through the Community Led Housing pathway as one option; other options and finance models can also be explored
Benefits of tiny living:
- Detached, eco, truly affordable home
- Efficient to maintain and heat
- Can be sited where they are needed, either as individual dwellings on residential plots, or grouped together to create micro communities
- Ideal for first time buyers, those transitioning in life, key workers, retired
- Can be custom designed and built to exact specification
- Can be tailored to match local housing stock
- Can be built on a permanent foundation and be mortgageable
Tiny homes are lived in as permanent homes in other countries, eg. NZ, America and Australia, giving the residents security, freedom and flexibility.
In the UK tiny homes are used as small temporary housing units, and as bespoke glamping units. They present an amazing opportunity to become a huge solution to the housing crisis
A compact home is not a caravan, nor a cheap square box. Rather it is a quality designed and well built home fit for a lifetime
There are many special interest groups online, notably Tiny House pages on Facebook, and many TV series to watch from New Zealand and America
