About

Each month, we support around 150 people in need of a helping hand as they go through the courts in Devon & Cornwall & into life beyond

The people who come through our door are at crisis point. This is where we meet them - inside the magistrates’ courts in Newton Abbot, Plymouth, Bodmin and Truro, so we're in a unique position to reach out.

Over the last 18 years, we’ve discovered a real need for free, impartial, practical advice as people struggle through the legal system. The cuts to Legal Aid have compounded the difficulties they face. Many have limited resources and, as a result, nowhere to turn.

We create a safe space where emotional and practical needs are addressed. Many feel stuck in a cycle of complex issues. The result can be crimes like unpaid taxes, fines or anti-social behaviour, along with a spiral of mental and physical health needs which some try to address with alcohol or drugs. The people we help are often terrified because they face losing everything.

Our compassionate, trusted, and experienced advisors are ready to guide anyone through this frightening and complex system. We enable anyone who comes through our door to make their own changes towards a more a positive future.

We are passionate about reducing the risk of re-offending and improving wellbeing by being here for them, and showing them a way through and hope for the future. By working with everyone in our community, from magistrates to local services, we divert away from crime, resulting in people living more law-abiding and positive, stable lives, ultimately benefiting everyone across Devon and Cornwall.

Volunteering with CASS+ could well be one of the most enriching and satisfying experiences of your life. We hold the lifetime achievement of The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. You will be fully supported with our inhouse wellbeing and training programmes and it’s a wonderful way to meet new people; discover more about our legal system; and increase your job prospects, skills and experience.
