Brentor and Moor Compassionate Neighbours is a small locally run charitable organisation which was established in 2017 with the aim of providing support at home to individuals in the wider Tavistock (West Devon) area living with a terminal illness and/or approaching the end of life.
BMCN is proud to boast a small but dedicated group of volunteers, who visit their clients on a regular basis - normally once a week for between one and three hours - to provide a listening ear, a shoulder to lean on, a friendly chat over a cup of tea, or perhaps some help with paperwork or to offer advocacy. If the person is well enough, they may go out together for a coffee, to a garden centre, or perhaps onto the moors or to the seaside. Most importantly, this can be a chance for the main carer to enjoy a much needed break for a couple of hours - perhaps to take the dog for a walk, to meet with friends, visit the hairdresser or simply get to the shops.
For the past seven years, BMCN has worked in partnership with St Luke's Hospice (|Plymouth), and has supported around a hundred people during this time - and always free of charge.
Our volunteers invariably tell us that they find the role incredibly rewarding. As an organisation, we place a high value on our members: they are our greatest asset. We are keen to find more volunteers to join our happy team, so if you feel you may have the time, the skills, and most importantly the compassion to help support our clients at this most challenging time in their lives, we would be delighted to hear from you. We provide training, DBS checks, ongoing support, and a mileage allowance.
If you think you can help in any way, please do get in touch - Thank you!
