The Blackdown Support Group is a local charity established in 1991 and linked to the Blackdown GP Practice. We cover the Blackdown Hills, a rural area which stretches across the county border between Somerset and Devon.
We offer practical and social Volunteer-led support to anyone in need in our area - this support includes community transport, social groups, home visiting, footcare, bereavement and carer support, help with form filling, wheelchair loans and advice about other services.
Our aims are to reduce social isolation, facilitate access to services and improve quality of life for people experiencing the effects of loneliness, financial difficulty, old age or ill health, whether mental or physical.
When access to activities and services is improved, health, well-being and feelings of connection and confidence are also improved. The Blackdown Support Group enables people to get around more easily, to make and meet friends and to feel they are cared for.
During the Covid-19 pandemic we have also provided voluntary neighbourhood assistance with shopping and prescription deliveries, errands, telephone befriending and voluntary support at our local vaccine clinics.
We have Volunteers located in the Parishes of Culmstock, Hemyock, Clayhidon, Dunkeswell, Upottery, Sheldon, Uffculme and Kentisbeare in Devon and Churchstanton, Buckland St Mary, Otterford and Bishopswood in Somerset. Volunteers are sometimes able to travel to other Parishes on the edges of our usual catchment area. Anyone who lives in the Blackdown Hills can contact us for advice and support.
