Berry Head Engagement Ranger

Opportunities for people to connect with the natural world of Torbay through education and volunteering.

About

Opportunities for people to connect with the natural world of Torbay through education and volunteering.

Hi, my name is Marije and I am the new Engagement Ranger at Berry Head National Nature Reserve, managed by Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust, a local independent charity caring for over 1,700 acres of natural spaces in Torbay.

I am looking to make contact with the local community in Torbay to develop volunteers to help with public engagement and practical tasks here at Berry Head.

There will be opportunities for people to build confidence in face-to-face communication by providing a physical presence on site and in our Visitor Centre to inform visitors about our interest features and their vulnerability.

Berry Head is renowned for its rare limestone grassland and unique species of flora and fauna and my aim is for volunteers to play an important educational role in their promotion and protection. This includes actively engaging with the local dog walking community to encourage responsible behaviours such as picking up after their dog and keeping dogs on leads around livestock.

The Berry Head ranger team run a work party every Thursday 0930-1500 where volunteers can enjoy a friendly social space and improve their practical skills out in a natural setting whilst assisting the ranger team with tasks such as scrub removal, raking, weeding, fencing, litter picking, and seasonal surveys, for example counting butterflies along a set transect route.

The Trust also regularly offers long-term volunteer opportunities (9-12 months, 4 days a week 0800-1630) working with our existing ranger team to gain extensive experience in the day-to-day running of a Reserve and associated habitat- and access management works. Volunteers receive a training budget to gain qualifications in First Aid and Brushcutter Operations and other relevant training of their choice, as well as free, shared accommodation on site (max. 3 residents). Many previous volunteers have found this a useful stepping stone to careers in the conservation sector and have gone on to work for organisations like the National Trust, Devon Wildlife Trust, Forestry England and others.

Please check our websites for vacancies or contact me by email if you would like to discuss any of these opportunities further: [email protected]
