Ashburton Growing Space is a new project aiming to improve people’s physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing through growing and sharing food.
We are based within the grounds of the Ashburton Branch of the Royal British Legion.
During our first growing season we built up a small but dedicated team of volunteer gardeners/growers, and produced fruit and vegetables, some of which were donated to the Community Fridge or used for a community fund-raising event and meal in the town. Of equal benefit has been the social interaction and sense of belonging to a shared venture, and the physical outdoor activity, connecting to the natural world. The project is about growing people as well as food!
The project is overseen by Ashburton Methodists, Church in Community, but is open to all, and we look forward to increasing our team of volunteers. We also seek in the coming months to host more community meals using our produce and support both another fund-raising evening for groups in the town, and the Community Fridge.
