The Well-being Café was set up in August 2022. This idea of this was to provide a space in Okehampton where people could go who were struggling with their mental health & well-being and to provide a community hub where people could meet friends and access practical support. The café offers support to all members of the community in Okehampton and the surrounding hamlets. The Well-being Café offers a place of safety, social interaction, access to therapeutic activities and practical support. A key aim is to make Okehampton and district a suicide safer community.
We now support up to 120 people each week who are struggling with their mental health, well-being, food poverty, homelessness, loneliness, isolation, abuse and addiction. We provide soup vouchers which are available at the food bank, at local churches and from ourselves and also run a pay-it-forward scheme so anyone who comes in to us who has not had a hot meal recently, or needs access to food in short term we can provide this. We have fed numerous individuals in Okehampton who are homeless & supported them to access emergency housing.
We have peer weekly support groups such as our knit and natter group on a Tuesday (which is very popular), Well-being Drop In, Book Club, Art Group & Teen's Space which is specifically for ages 11-17 as a safe space for them to chill with free food & drink provided. This was hugely supported by the local community in the form of an online fundraiser.
We run courses in house such as our Anxiety Management Course & 4 Week Happiness Course, which are growing increasingly popular, and the feedback we have is a testament to the impact we are having. One person commented after completed our anxiety management course 'I think this course is far better than what the NHS offered me for my anxiety'. We work also in partnership with other local services such as GP, social prescribers and other local charities & CIC’s.
