Horizons is a community sailing charity in Plymouth that helps disadvantaged, vulnerable, disabled, and otherwise underrepresented people access sailing and water-based activities. The charity uses sailing as a way to build confidence, resilience, teamwork, practical skills and wellbeing, often providing opportunities free of charge or at heavily subsidised rates. It works with people who might not otherwise have access to the marine environment or sailing opportunities. In 2024, Horizons became part of the network of the Andrew Simpson Foundation (ASF), joining as a delivery partner in Plymouth. The partnership was created to strengthen Horizons' long-term sustainability and expand its impact while allowing it to continue serving local young people. ASF provides organisational support, resources and a wider national network to help Horizons grow. The Andrew Simpson Foundation was established in memory of Andrew Simpson, the British Olympic gold medal-winning sailor. Its mission is to "transform lives through sailing and watersports" by removing barriers to participation and making the benefits of being on the water accessible to young people from all backgrounds. The Foundation focuses on four broad areas: Today, Horizons is one of the charities within the ASF network and serves as a practical example of the Foundation's inclusion strategy. Through Horizons, young people in Plymouth can gain sailing experience, develop life skills, and access opportunities that may lead to further education, training, volunteering or employment pathways.
