Role Summary
As a Welcome Desk & Community Support Volunteer, you’ll be the warm, friendly face that greets everyone who walks through the doors of St Sidwell’s Community Centre. Your presence helps create a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for people from all backgrounds. You will support visitors by offering information, guidance, and reassurance, helping them feel confident navigating the centre and accessing the services they need.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet and welcome visitors in a friendly, approachable manner, ensuring everyone feels included and comfortable.

  • Manage general enquiries from members of the public by phone, email, or in person, providing clear, helpful information.

  • Guide visitors to rooms or activities, ensuring they know where to go and who to speak to.

  • Use active listening skills to understand people’s needs, concerns, or questions.

  • Signpost individuals to appropriate support, services, or partner organisations when needed.

  • Offer calm, compassionate support to people who may be distressed, confused, or in need of reassurance.

  • Maintain a welcoming reception area, supporting the smooth running of daily activities and events.

  • Work as part of a team, communicating clearly with staff and volunteers to ensure consistent support for visitors.

Skills & Personal Qualities

  • Warm, friendly, and non-judgemental approach

  • Good communication and active listening skills

  • Confidence in speaking with people from diverse backgrounds

  • Ability to stay calm and supportive in emotionally sensitive situations

  • Willingness to learn and follow guidance

  • Reliable, punctual, and comfortable representing the centre’s values

Training & Support
Full training will be provided, including:

  • Induction to the centre’s services and values

  • Guidance on handling enquiries and signposting

  • Support in managing challenging or sensitive conversations

  • Ongoing supervision and opportunities to develop your skills

Impact of the Role
By volunteering in this position, you help create a supportive, accessible space where community members can find connection, information, and comfort. You will play a vital part in ensuring St Sidwell’s remains a welcoming and trusted space for all.
