New volunteers are always welcome!
The care, restoration and future of The Italian Garden depends entirely on our amazing volunteer team. The current team was established in 2020 and has seen the development of the garden, clearing many areas, uncovering new finds and now focusing on specific areas for replanting. Our volunteers are not only gardeners but also help restore the limestone paths, run our plant nursery, make tables, benches and huts, lead our guided tours, record wildlife or help with admin, social media and marketing.
Who are our volunteers and why do they volunteer?
Everyone falls in love with the magical atmosphere and story of The Italian Garden! Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds and professions which makes for a very interesting team.
All our volunteers share a love of nature & wildlife and have a desire to be involved in giving this very special garden a future. Some are experienced, hands-on gardeners and some are individuals hoping to gain new skills. You don't need to have any experience to volunteer for us, as you will be joining a team who can support and guide you.
If you are interested in joining our friendly and supportive team then there are many ways you can volunteer. We are actively looking for gardener volunteers available on a Thursday, and for Tour Guides where there is more varied and flexible opportunities to the days you volunteer.
To chat about how any of the the opportunities could meet your interests or if you would like more information, then email volunteer@theitaliangarden.org
Why Volunteer at The Italian Garden?
We value all our volunteers and they are essential to the success of this garden. Our volunteers are provided with all necessary equipment, as well as lunch and refreshments, and are actively involved in developing the plans for the garden. In return we offer:
- the chance to be part of a friendly and welcoming team
- free access to the garden all year round for yourself and your friends and family
- lunch and refreshment on your volunteer day
- invitations to social events, specifically for volunteers
- hand tools, gloves and personal protective equipment (provided on the day)
What is expected of me?
- to be openminded and willing to learn and work as part of a team
- to dress appropriately - as a garden volunteer you'll need good gripped footwear, dress in layers, waterproof coats and trousers.
- to be willing to undertake practical gardening tasks such as; propagation, potting on of plants, weeding, clearing, cutting back, lifting, deadheading, dividing, mulching and seasonal pruning;
- or to take on ad hoc small carpentry or repair projects;
- or to support our biodiversity initiative by recording wildlife;
- or let us train you as a tour guide to share the history of the garden with our visitors.
