Overview:

Tavistock Area Support Services is a well established charity based in Tavistock and its purpose is to provide support older people and adults with disabilities in West Devon. This is done through provision of outreach and befriending services, transport services and activities at the Anchorage Centre in Tavistock as well as in surrounding villages. There is also a volunteer led café in town and a shop. The charity employs ten staff including a full time manager.

The Volunteer Treasurer plays a critical role in ensuring the charity's financial stability and transparency. As the treasurer, you will work closely with the Board of Trustees, providing oversight of the charity’s financial matters, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and helping to maintain the charity’s financial health. You will also work closely with the General manager attending finance related meetings as and when possible (these may possibly be done remotely).

Key Responsibilities:

    • Monitor cash flow, investments, and financial operations.
    • Manage and oversee bank accounts and major payments
    • Oversee the maintenance of accurate financial records and accounts in accordance with accounting standards and charity law (bookkeeping is carried out by a local accountant using Xero accounting software)
  • Reporting:
    • Provide regular financial reports to the Board of Trustees, including monthly updates on the charity’s financial position.
    • Prepare and present the charity’s annual financial statements in line with statutory requirements (such as those outlined by the Charity Commission for England and Wales).
  • Compliance & Governance:
    • Ensure that the charity complies with all relevant financial regulations, including charity law, tax laws, and funder requirements.
    • Assist with the filing of annual returns to the Charity Commission and HMRC, including Gift Aid claims.
    • Ensure that proper financial controls and safeguards are in place to protect the charity’s assets.
  • Strategic Financial Advice:
    • Work with the Board to develop long-term financial strategies and sustainability plans.
    • Advise the Board on fundraising opportunities and financial risks.
    • Provide financial expertise and advice to help the charity raise funds and manage donations effectively.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in finance or accounting (professional qualification desirable but not essential).
  • Understanding of charity finance, including knowledge of relevant regulations and best practices.
  • Attention to Detail and ability to manage financial records accurately.
  • Strong Communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial information to non-financial colleagues.
  • Commitment to the charity’s values and mission.
  • Proactive approach, with an ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Desirable Skills:

  • Experience of using financial software or accounting packages.
  • Experience in a similar volunteer or charity finance role.
  • Knowledge of the charity sector and funding environment.

What You Can Expect:

  • A rewarding opportunity to make a difference in the charity sector.
