Brief Summary
To lead walks and introductory tours for visiting school groups.
These will be principally Primary Schools and have a general, introductory feel rather than relying on very specific knowledge. Thus, a broad understanding of Dartmoor’s habitats, wildlife and cultural heritage is all that is required along with an enjoyment of Dartmoor’s special qualities…and the willingness and enthusiasm to share these with others.
Skills and Experience
Guides must hold a minimum of the South West Moorland Leader Training Scheme (SWMLTS) -Summer Moorland Leader Award level for walks in the Summer (April - September) and the winter level qualification for any winter walking (October – March). Walking Group Leader, Mountain Leader qualifications and above are very welcome!
A further requirement is that you hold a current 2 day first aid in the outdoors certificate. Guides must be confident as a leader, be able to work well with young people of all ages, enjoy sharing their knowledge with them, and be capable of dealing with any problems which may arise during a walk. The ability to communicate effectively with people of different ages and from different backgrounds is essential.
Guides are also expected to have a sound knowledge of Dartmoor - its prehistory, industrial archaeology and natural history as well as an understanding of the purposes of National Parks generally and the policies of the Dartmoor National Park Authority. An enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be necessary.
