A guide to understanding sustainable funding and fair compensation for the true costs of delivering services in the VCSE sector.
Understanding and applying Full Cost Recovery (FCR) is essential for VCSE organisations seeking sustainable funding and fair compensation for the true costs of delivering services.
This 1.5‑hour interactive workshop helps to understand FCR by breaking down what it is, why it matters and how to confidently calculate and communicate your organisation’s full costs to funders and commissioners.
Through practical examples, discussion and simple tools you can take away, participants will learn how to allocate overheads and embed FCR into internal processes in order to strengthen bids, budgets and conversations with partners.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Define Full Cost Recovery and explain why it is essential for organisational sustainability in the VCSE sector.
- Identify direct, indirect, and overhead costs and understand how they contribute to the true cost of service delivery.
- Apply practical methods for allocating overheads across projects in a fair, transparent, and funder‑friendly way.
- Use simple tools or templates to calculate FCR for their own organisation or a specific project.
- Integrate FCR into funding applications and budgeting processes to strengthen income generation and strategic planning.
- Communicate confidently with funders and partners about the need for and legitimacy of, recovering full costs.
