About the film: The film was directed by acclaimed writer/director Jane Campion and arguably remains one of the best loved cinematic works of the last 40 years.
Combining elements of Gothic romance and Victorian melodrama it is an original
creation of a traditional love story, at times of savage intensity as Ada McGrath (Holly
Hunter), mute from the age of six, and her daughter Flora begin a new life in a barely
colonised New Zealand in the 19th century.
The Story: A new life and an arranged marriage but when Ada's new husband refuses to
transport her beloved piano to their new home she rebelliously, takes an instant
dislike to him and the piano, to her dismay, is sold to a neighbouring settler, an
extraordinary man who values the indigenous people and who has turned half-Māori.
Unbeknown to her husband, Ada is grateful for the access the settler gives her to her
piano and agrees to tutor him in recompense; there follows a complex relationship
releasing pent up emotions of desire, rage and cruelty when Ada's husband (Sam
Neill) ultimately realises the deception.
What people say about the film: Called a poetic and sensory delight, Michael Nymans' music and the cinematography "illuminate the savage wasteland" that was New Zealand in the 19th century. The film was the recipient of 8 Academy Award nominations including best picture and director, with Oscars for Holly Hunter and Anna Paquin (Flora).
