Role Overview

To provide leadership, compassion, and peer support to individuals affected by tinnitus through regular group meetings. The Support Group Leader helps foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where members can share experiences, learn coping strategies, and reduce the sense of isolation that often accompanies tinnitus.

Tinnitus UK's vision is 'a world without tinnitus.' We provide life-changing support to the 1 in 7 people in the UK who experience and live with tinnitus and are committed to engaging with the research community in its efforts to find new treatments and, hopefully, cures for tinnitus. 


Responsible to: Volunteer and Support Group Officer

Location: Home-based and local area 

Commitment: 4-6 hours per month

Requirements: Volunteers must be aged 18+ and will be asked to do a DBS check  


Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate regular support group meetings (monthly or as agreed) in person or online.
  • Welcome new members, ensure all participants feel heard and supported.
  • Share educational resources and promote understanding of tinnitus and related issues.
  • Encourage peer-to-peer support, empathy, and respectful dialogue.
  • Liaise with Tinnitus UK to report on group progress and challenges.
  • Ensure meetings are accessible, inclusive, and adhere to any safeguarding guidelines.
  • Promote upcoming meetings through approved channels, with the help of the Tinnitus UK if applicable.

Qualities and Skills

  • Personal experience with tinnitus or empathy for those living with it.
  • Good listening and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to guide group discussions and manage group dynamics sensitively.
  • Dependable, compassionate, and non-judgmental.
  • Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Basic organizational and time management skills.
  • Basic IT skills, particularly email and attending online meetings via Teams or Zoom

Training and Support

  • Initial induction and training provided by Tinnitus UK
  • Ongoing support and access to resources.
  • Opportunities to connect with other group leaders and share best practices.
