Discover the techniques that lead artist and creative producer Katy Lee used to write poems and poetic prose for the Going on Taw project.

Explore place-based writing through guided tasks, fun word play and time for personal reflection, all using the River Taw as inspiration.

The workshops will be held both in the library and out by the river itself.

The workshops will be a playful, informal approach to creating word patterns that some people might call poems. . .

No previous experience needed.

Tuesday 21st May & Tuesday 4th June 10-12 Please book on to both workshops if you can.

Going on Taw

Going on Taw (GoT) is an18-month storytelling & poetry project that started in January 2023. As Katy travelled the length of the Taw from Source to Sea, she gathered stories, old wives tales and more recent gossip. She spoke to experts, learnt about the history and ecology of the river, as well as those both past and present who depended on the Taw.

The project has given 172 community participants, the opportunity to play an active role in the creation of creative content, from seven community groups; 4 primary school classes, Barnstaple Memory Cafe, Barnstaple Youth Centre & ESOL students at Sunrise Diversity. A poetry pen-pal scheme was also set up between the primary schools & Sunrise Diversity, poems travelled up & down the river gathering in size. In total 28 workshops were delivered & 300 poems written.

The participant’s thoughts and imaginings about the river were written on the canoe that Katy paddled down the Taw and have shaped the content for a live professional storytelling & poetry performance, 7 podcasts & a 7-week exhibition at Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon Spring / Summer 2024.
