The Acorn Centre has been very lucky over the years with it's endless supply of volunteers who have given us their precious time and skills and have transformed our garden area into an amazing oasis. Our previous volunteers have now all moved on to pastures new and we are now looking for new volunteers to help us continue the great work and keep our beautiful garden maintained and healthy. There are a number of projects within the garden that focus on restoring and redeveloping areas to make way for further projects at the Centre.

Project #1 Sensory Garden

We are lucky enough to already have the basis of a Sensory Garden area however it has now become very over grown and we need this cleared and taken to the next level. We would love to work with volunteers who have a passion in supporting people who have SEN needs and would love to create a space where people can come and feel calm and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. If we can transform this space we can then open it up to workshops and provide a area that is an ongoing support for people with SEN needs. Volunteering for transforming the garden doesn't need to stop there. If you are passionate about supporting people with SEN needs and have a good knowledge about plants and the environment then you could be part of it's ongoing journey (subject to a DBS check and training).

Project #2 Vegetable & Herb Garden

We would love to introduce a vegetable and a herb garden at the centre and we have a perfect sport for it. Being able to grow herbs and vegetables and use these items to make delicious dishes in our Acorn to Oak café has been a long standing dream of ours. This will also pave way for other projects that we have in mind such as Youth workshops in our Youth clubs. Healthy eating workshops to showcase the importance of the importance of eating healthy foods and how it effects our bodies and helps us to grow. We can also use the ingredients when we have our Warm spaces events in the year and we can even sell our products at our events throughout the year.

Project #3 Learning Hub

In the garden we have a huge storage container that we would love to transform into a learning hub. The Garden Hub will support the additional area of the garden such as the vegetable and herb garden and the sensory area. The Garden Hub will also act as a space where everyone can learn about growth, vegetation, plants, sensory, planting and so much more.

Project #4 Terrace Area

The Terrace is a great universal space and is in need of update and repair. We need a new fence, repainting, lights added and made safe for people to use again.

And then there is ongoing maintenance. These projects are vital for us at the Acorn Centre to be able to offer more to it's much loved community. We can't do this without you and your help. So in turn we would love to start a Volunteer Social Club. If you would like to be a part of a huge development and chance to create something really special and can spare a few hours in the week then please contact [email protected] today. Tea's & coffee's are at the ready for when you have finished and we will even throw in some biscuits and/or cake at the end of each volunteer day. Starting this community group is going to be equally beneficial to you as it will give you a chance to connect and meet with like minded people. We are very much looking forward to meeting you all and can't wait for the buzz to start!!!
