On the morning of the local country fair, Johnny 'Rooster' Byron is a wanted man. The council want to serve him an eviction notice, his young son wants to go to the fair, a father wants to give him a serious kicking, and a motley crew of mates wants his ample supply of drugs and alcohol.
Jerusalem premiered at the Royal Court Theatre in 2009, starring Mark Rylance in a highly-acclaimed performance as Rooster. The play (with substantially the same cast) was revived in 2022.
Ceni Wyatt is set to deliver this incredible version of Jerusalem to Dartington on behalf of the silenced, the hidden and the uprooted members of our community. A long standing member of Dartington Playgoers – Ceni has directed many plays for the Company but after seeing Jerusalem at the Apollo Theatre in London in 2022 she felt utterly compelled to bring it to the people. ‘Rooster Byron isn’t just a man living on the fringes of society’ he’s a thousand stories that polite society doesn’t want to listen to.’
