From Here to Eternity is a 1951 novel by James Jones, later adapted into an acclaimed 1953 film. Set in 1941, just months before the attack on Pearl Harbor, the story follows the lives of U.S. Army soldiers stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. The novel explores themes of military life, love, duty, and personal rebellion.

The central character, Private Robert E. Lee Prewitt, is a principled bugler and former boxer who refuses to fight in the ring after blinding a friend. His superiors try to coerce him into boxing again, leading to harsh treatment and isolation. Meanwhile, Sergeant Milt Warden, a tough but compassionate man, begins a forbidden affair with Karen Holmes, the neglected wife of his commanding officer.

As tensions rise within the ranks and personal dramas unfold, the bombing of Pearl Harbor ultimately brings tragedy and transformation, exposing the cost of loyalty, honor, and love in a rigid military system on the brink of war.

The story is renowned for its unflinching portrayal of army life and its emotional depth, and remains a powerful exploration of individual struggle against institutional forces.
