The Role

This is a fantastic opportunity for a senior finance professional who wants to work in a charity where the employees are as important as delivering the mission. This role might appeal to an established accountant or auditor who would like to learn more about managing operations such as IT, human resources, charity governance and transformation management. There is scope for this role to grow with you over the next few years.

 

In 2026, we will be introducing a new version of our CRM system and we’d like to migrate from Sage Line 50 to Xero. We’re looking for someone who’s enthusiastic about embracing and managing changes to our systems.

 

You’ll bring energy and enthusiasm to the team, ensuring financial functions are carried out efficiently, effectively, accurately and in a timely way. You will be supported by a knowledgeable and experienced team. You'll focus on managing and improving financial processes, ensuring that the Leadership Group have up-to-date and accurate records for reporting to the Board, preparing the accounts for audit each year and improving processes.

 

Key Relationships

  • The Senior Finance Manager will report to the Chief Executive Officer
  • This role will line manage the Finance Manager and Finance Administrator
  • This role works very closely with all members of the team to facilitate smooth and regular communication

 

Key Areas of Responsibility 

  1. Treasury and Investment Management  
  • Treasury management to maximise returns on cash
  • Monitor endowment investments and provide calculations and support in relation to total return 
  • Supervise preparation of quarterly investment management report 

 

  1. Bookkeeping and Management Accounts 
  • Supervise monthly bank reconciliation
  • Supervise production of annual fund balances for donors
  • Supervise production of management accounts, cashflow and updates to the fundraising pipeline

 

  1. Annual Accounts 
  • Prepare statutory accounts, working with the CEO to ensure income and costs are allocated accurately across SORP categories 
  • Coordinate the audit process, engaging with auditors and prepare information for audit and liaise with auditors in the conduct of the annual audit process 
  • Support the CEO in the preparation of the annual budget and cash flow forecast 
  • Ensure we meet requirements for Companies House, the Charity Commission and HMRC

 

  1. Other Work Required 
  • Provide supportive line management to the finance team
  • Attend DCF events as requested, including very occasionally, evenings  
  • Any other reasonable duties as requested 

 

Person Specification - Skills, Knowledge and Experience  

Required 

  • Ideally at least 3 years’ experience in a similar role 
  • Minimum of AAT Level 4, preferably ACA/ACCA or equivalent 
  • Experience of accounting software, especially Xero Cloud
  • Experience of working with databases and Office 365  
  • Knowledge of charity finance and SORP changes
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Able to work under own initiative but also able to request support when necessary 
  • Confident managing a busy and varied workload and able to prioritise effectively  
  • Good problem-solving competencies  
  • Supervision or line management of other team members 

 

Desirable  

  • Understanding of the role of local charities, voluntary organisations and social enterprises, and the people they help 
  • Experience presenting at board level
