We are currently recruiting volunteers to sit on appeal panels that decide the outcomes of admission appeals in Devon, where a parent / guardian has appealed the decision made to refuse their child a place at a school.
The process requires listening to the case on behalf of the school (why they cannot admit any further pupils) and the parent / guardian’s case (why they want to attend that school) and making a balanced judgement, considering the best interests of the school, children at that school, and the young person in question, as well as ensuring that the admission decisions are made in accordance with the law.
Admission appeals are held remotely, and no experience is required. You will receive full training, and Devon County Council staff are available to get you up to speed on using remote videoconferencing technologies. At each hearing there will be an experienced clerk to offer advice where required. You will also be eligible to receive a small subsistence payment for your time for each day of appeals you sit on a panel for.
Appeals are generally scheduled to fill a full working day, but flexibility is possible on occasion. Hearings are held throughout the year, with May to July being the busiest part of the year, as that is when all admission appeals relating to the new academic year are heard.
