Poetry in the Library: Winter Warmer at Exeter Library 8th February 2024, from 19:15 - 21:15

Tickets are £8 or £6 concession. For further information and to book tickets you can book your place with staff at Exeter Library. Alternatively, you can book online by visiting https://www.eventbrite.co.uk (includes a booking fee).

On Thursday 8th Feb we’re hosting a cosy evening of poetry, music and wintry, wordy magic.
Featuring poetry and harp duo Chris Tutton and Anne Denholm, plus our young poetry prize winner, and more support to be announced.

Beth Calverley is a poet, performer, facilitator and founder of The Poetry Machine. Her writing delights in the weird and wonderful things we do when trying to belong.

Beth is Poet in Residence at University Hospitals Bristol & Weston NHS Foundation Trust, Oxford University Hospitals NHS FT and the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool. She has been a Poet in Residence for The Poetry House in Ledbury (2021-22), a Bristol Poetry Festival Resident Poet (2021), a Bristol Life Awards Arts Finalist (2020), and a Roundhouse Slam Finalist (2018). She has worked with the BBC, ITV, Sky, and many more.

Beth travels across the country to places of work, care, learning and play - from hospitals to festivals, weddings to woodlands, high streets to heritage sites, schools to universities, office blocks to theatres - performing, facilitating and co-creating poetry.

Her debut collection, Brave Faces & Other Smiles (Verve Poetry Press, 2020), explores some of the countless and complex reasons why we smile. Benjamin Zephaniah called it "a great collection with a honest, real theme."

Young People's Poetry Prize
In the run up to the Winter Warmer, we're looking for wintery wonderful poetry from local emerging poets.

One young poet (aged 16-25) will be picked to perform a poem on the night, and will receive a £50 performance fee. (Plus prizes available for 2 x highly commended poems.)

To enter, just email us with your name, age, and your poem. Email Chris on [email protected] by 5pm on Sunday 28th Jan. The winner will be notified by Tue 30th Jan, and entries will be judged by representatives from Exeter Library, Exeter City of Literature and Spork! Poetry.

Submissions can be in the form of a video, audio file or written (no more 20 lines long, or 3 mins of audio / video) You must be based in Devon, and available to attend the performance on Feb 8th.
