The Pilates group is now well into its second year with an enthusiastic band of regular participants, improving their core stability, balance and posture.
Pilates is a gentle exercise, suitable for all ages and levels of fitness, even those who have never exercised before. The slow controlled movements primarily strengthen the ‘core’ muscles that stabilise and support the spine, realign the body and help correct postural problems. Most of the exercises can be adapted so that we can accommodate those who have difficulty getting onto the floor, and can be done in a chair. No special clothing is required, just something loose and comfortable. Pilates is usually but not necessarily, barefoot.
We start the class with an easy, dance inspired warm up, followed by a standing section, focusing on balance and posture, and then down onto the mat for our main sequence floor exercises. Our session finishes with stretching and relaxation time. We often utilise equipment such as bands and balls to introduce new challenges to familiar movements. Most importantly, we have a lot of fun!
As an instructor, it gives me great satisfaction to see such an improvement, from week to week, in my participants’ confidence and mobility. I also feel strongly that exercise benefits everyone and should be accessible to all.
Since starting the group, I have also qualified in post and pre-natal Pilates. If anyone is interested in this, or would just like some advice on exercises to do at home, I’m happy to help.
