Torrington, 1879. As church visitor to the poor, Lucy Jones has frequent meetings with Torrington’s deeply unpopular curate, Reverend Francis. When claims are made that he and Lucy were seen acting improperly together on the Common, the people of Torrington seize the opportunity to be rid of Francis. The ensuing scandal, culminating in the burning of effigies by a crowd of three thousand people, makes national news and brings disgrace to Lucy and her family.
