Are you confident and kind? Do you have experience of working with learning disabilities? Up for a knit? (Don't worry, it's easy to learn). Does this sounds like something you could do? Can you can spare some time just 6 times a year? Then we may have just the thing for you!
We support a strong spirited and confident woman who would love a visitor every other month to have a chat over some knitting. Once you have got to know each other better you might like to pop out for a coffee in town.
The support staff at her home are a well run team that know her well. They will make sure that you feel well supported in your role as a volunteer.
Although she is an absolutely delightful person, she can also occasionally exhibit challenging behaviour, so experience with learning disability is essential. She can also take a little while to get to know someone, so you would need to be reliable and able to make a long commitment to the role.
We can be fairly flexible on when the visits are, but weekday availability between 10am and 5pm would be preferable.
The Mencap Visiting Service was founded in 1963. It meant that the parents of a person with a learning disability could know that someone would look in on them when they were no longer around. In this volunteer role, you will not only be providing a valuable social visit to this man, but also honouring the wishes of his parents.
