Wildwood Devon, located in 45 acres of beautiful Escot Park, has a wooded landscape, beech hedge maze and walled garden that was designed in the 1800s. In the 1980s this walled garden was replanted by estate owners the Kennaway family with rose beds, fruit trees and climbing shrubs.
Wildwood Devon are now giving some green-fingered TLC to the walled garden with a team of gardening volunteers, to maintain it as an area that is attractive to our visitors, valuable to wildlife and a resource for onsite education activities. Gardening tasks for our volunteers can include any of the following: weeding and mulching flowerbeds and borders, pruning fruit trees and climbing shrubs, erecting/maintaining plant supports and tying in climbing plants, propagating plants for the garden areas and for plant sales, planting up/tidying flowerbeds and path edging, harvesting fruit in season, planting new trees/shrubs and carrying out aftercare. Tools, gardening gloves and training will be provided where needed, along with tea/coffee and biscuits!
Wildwood gardening volunteers can commit to as much or as little time as they wish weekly, fortnightly or monthly; on your volunteering days you will also have free access to the park with our collection of native British animals (including wolves and bears), and volunteer discounts in our cafe and kiosk shop.
