A 6-week course to support those who are newly diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and those living in areas of deprivation through a cooking and healthy eating programme.
The 6-week structured course will cover healthy living, with the focus being around healthy eating. Due to the levels of deprivation within Torbay and the cost-of-living crisis we aim to provide individuals with low-cost recipe ideas that they can replicate at home.
Each session will be delivered jointly by Turning Heads and Diabetes UK with the support of volunteers. Recipes used will be approved by Diabetes UK for the suitability for people living with type 2 diabetes.
Participants will be shown and guided to cook healthy low-cost meals, whilst learning the benefits of healthy eating and having the opportunity for peer-to-peer support.
After each session each participant will be given an additional easy to follow recipe, with an option of either the ingredients to take away with them or a supermarket voucher to purchase the foods themselves or to contribute to cooking equipment. We would encourage the participant to cook this recipe at home, and feedback to the group during the following session.
In addition, during the sessions we will be joined by local organisations discussing services available.
We aim for each participant to leave the 6-week programme feeling more confident in their ability to prepare and cook healthier options, enabling them to better manage their condition.
