Become a volunteer with the Heritage Team at Barnstaple Town Council as part of the Activities and Events Team. Your role would be to help plan and facilitate activities and events for us to run for the local community, such as family activities, school visits, and public events.
What Does The Role Involve?
Tasks vary depending on the type of activity/event. Working with the Heritage Team typical tasks include:
- Setting up the venue (room layout, activities, resources, gazebos sometimes, displays etc) and packing away at the end of the day.
- Meeting, greeting and directing members of the public, dealing with their requests and enquiries (often by simply directing them to a member of BTC staff)
- Helping to facilitate activities (often aimed at families and school groups) – and sometimes helping to develop ideas for the delivery of these.
- Serving refreshments, if appropriate
- Wearing costumes or assisting people wearing costume if necessary
- Sorting, preparing, mending, cleaning and taking care of costumes
- Helping with the care of handling collections including preparation & admin for loan boxes
- Providing engaging tours of the Guildhall, using a range of information/presentation skills
- Providing bespoke tours to groups with special needs, working as part of a team
- Giving talks and presentations to a range of groups, or assisting BTC staff giving talks
Training will be available for new customer care approaches and ways to work with S.E.N.D. groups, families, schools etc.
There will usually be an event briefing provided for individual events, detailing who is doing what and some background to the activities and site. *DBS checks are sometimes required*
