Help for community micro-enterprises offering care and support
Community Catalysts have been commissioned by Devon County Council to assist people to become self-employed or form community ventures which offer care and support to older and disabled people. We call the people who offer this support Community Micro Enterprises. The goal is to make sure that people who need care and support to live their lives can get help in ways, times and places that suit them, with real choice of attractive local options.
We offer a development programme to help people turn their ideas, passions and skills into their own small care enterprise. We offer coaching, mentoring, support and signposting to provide people with everything they need to get started and to ensure their enterprise is safe, legal, sustainable and able to provide high quality care and support. We also help people to market and promote their enterprise. All of the support which we offer is free of charge as it is funded by Devon County Council.
The development programme gives a friendly and supportive point of contact to explore people’s ideas and provides practical information on developing an enterprise, accessing training, regulation, getting policies and procedures in place, and the opportunities available within health and social care. People do not necessarily need a background in care but must be passionate about making a difference to people’s lives.
Enterprises might offer support with things like: cooking and cleaning, sitting and chatting, washing and dressing or have other creative ideas like offering activities or social opportunities in the community. Some of the benefits for people thinking of starting an enterprise are that they can choose their own hours, work locally, offer a personalised service, set a fair rate of pay and be in charge of the support which they offer. For the people who need support, micro-enterprises which are rooted in their local community can be appealing as they are able to provide a consistent, responsive and bespoke approach.
