Transform lives by teaching adults to read
Read Easy is a national charity with nearly 100 local groups using volunteers to teach adults to read. With 2.4m (1 in 30) UK adults struggling with reading, it’s a huge problem with non-readers suffering much worse employment, health and self-esteem. Many people hide it, saying “I’ve forgotten my glasses” or “I'm not good with forms/technology”. In an increasingly digital world, it's even harder for non-readers to access services.
Our service is free, confidential and 1-1 (a service no longer available through publicly funded adult education).
Evaluation results are amazing including >200% improvement in handling everyday communications (texting, dealing with bills, reading letters about health etc and >200% improvement in self-esteem.
We are present in many locations across Devon. We need a variety of volunteers, not just to coach people in reading but also to manage the provision, publicity, funding and administration of our services.
