I work for the North Devon Biosphere on the Communities Project as a Community Animator for Appledore.
The four year project aims to develop:
community-led climate action that is further reaching, better connected, better equipped and more resilient
stronger green career pathways and a larger green economy with more opportunities for local young people
communities that are increasingly nature-rich and better placed to tackle and mitigate the climate challenge
community hubs which can access expert advice and cascade support and links out to the wider community
Martha has a wide-ranging professional background, from teaching sailing at Roadford and Tamar lakes to conducting bat and reptile surveys across the UK as an ecologist, leading outdoor environmental learning out in the wilds of Pembrokeshire (including many days crabbing – a top Appledore pastime) to working with volunteers for the Woodland Trust.
Martha has first-hand experience in a range of job roles that would interest any young person considering a green career – which is one of the goals of this project to encourage. This unique lottery funded role will draw on Martha’s skills as a communicator – both listening as well as speaking - due to the co-design nature of the project.
She is keen to hear ideas for nature and sustainability from the local community and support them to convert those ideas into creative actions for nature recovery and climate change mitigation.
Martha is a regular in Appledore for cafes, events and playgrounds – do stop her for a chat if you see her around!
