Ray Winstone stars as Steve, a tough but introspective teenager recently released from a borstal (youth detention center). Determined to start anew, he travels alone to the seaside town of Torquay to compete in a long-distance swimming race. However, his fresh start is quickly complicated by the arrival of three local thugs who recognise him from his past and begin harassing him. While navigating this tension, Steve befriends two girls, Carole and Angie, who offer him emotional support and companionship. Through their friendship, Steve begins to rediscover a sense of hope and personal connection. The story unfolds against the backdrop of a vibrant seaside summer, with themes of redemption, alienation, and youthful yearning woven throughout.

The film is notable for its raw, realistic portrayal of working-class youth in late 1970s Britain and marked one of Ray Winstone’s earliest and most memorable performances. It combines elements of coming-of-age drama with social realism, offering a gritty yet poignant look at personal growth in the face of adversity.
