About Us

Devon Healing Horsemanship (DHH) is an independent charity, registered in 2023, dedicated to transforming the lives of children, young people, and adults in Devon who struggle with poor mental health, sensory or emotional disabilities, and problematic behaviors.

We provide unique, action-based equine interventions, helping individuals develop essential skills such as confidence, calmness, and communication. We work with those who haven’t found success with talk-based therapies, referred to us by professionals including schools, social workers, mental health teams, and probation services.

Our mission is simple: to offer innovative, compassionate support that gives people hope, resilience, and the tools to thrive.

Why Join Us as a Safeguarding Trustee?

As a Safeguarding Trustee, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring we maintain the highest standards of safeguarding for all our participants, staff, and volunteers. Your expertise will directly contribute to a safer, stronger organization that makes life-changing differences every day.

This is more than a governance role—it’s a chance to be part of a forward-thinking, passionate team. You’ll champion safeguarding, promote a positive culture, and ensure everyone we work with is protected and supported.

What’s In It for You?

  • Impact: Help create a safer environment for vulnerable individuals who need us the most.
  • Professional Growth: Enhance your skills in charity governance and safeguarding leadership.
  • Satisfaction: Know that your work helps children return to education, rebuilds family relationships, and gives people the tools to face life’s challenges.
  • Collaboration: Work alongside a dedicated team committed to making a tangible difference.

What You’ll Do

Safeguarding Duties

  • Ensure safeguarding policies reflect current legislation and best practices.
  • Oversee safeguarding risks, ensure mitigation strategies, and review the safeguarding risk register.
  • Act as the Board’s safeguarding contact, supporting our CEO the safeguarding lead with concerns or complaints.
  • Promote a positive safeguarding culture throughout the organization.
  • Attend relevant safeguarding training and support the development of trustees’ knowledge.

General Trustee Duties

  • Shape DHH’s strategic direction alongside the Board and CEO.
  • Ensure DHH complies with Charity Commission regulations and safeguarding expectations.
  • Monitor organisational performance, including financial viability and risk management.
  • Champion DHH’s mission, advocating for the charity through personal networks and beyond.

Who We’re Looking For

You’ll be a great fit if you:

  • Have experience in safeguarding (e.g., social work, education, mental health, or law enforcement).
  • Understand UK safeguarding legislation and best practices.
  • Can communicate effectively, providing clear advice and guidance.
  • Are passionate about mental health and improving lives.
  • Have safeguarding training or are willing to complete it with our support.

We also welcome individuals who are non-judgmental, positive, pragmatic, and eager to champion our innovative work.

Time Commitment

  • 4 x Board Meetings per year (2 hours each, remote).
  • Occasional time to review policies and support safeguarding reports.
  • Flexibility to assist with urgent safeguarding matters when needed.
